Following the recent loss of a dear friend and many years on from my own diagnosis, here is a piece I wrote in 2017 that summed up a mixture of feelings on this topic we all know too well. I have performed this piece at numerous events including Clic Sargent’s art exhibition for World Cancer Day and their 10th Anniversary concert for the incredible music programme supporting young musicians who have or are recovering from cancer.

My initial thought when I first found out
Was that I would be fine
That I don’t have time
To be ill or have more treatment.
When chasing after a career
Paying rent to some rich profiteer
And just trying to steer clear
Of failure and falling under society’s leer
Was already enough on a 20-year-old’s plate.
